RED GILL

REDGILLS

A European lure that is probably found in every boat anglers tackle box in that part of the world, one of the truly universal lures. The list of species that this lure has caught is endless, and although made out of a soft synthetic rubber, it lasts well, even on toothsome creatures. The swimming action when slow trolled is a marvel, but this lure really comes into its own when retrieved from the depths, using a ‘flying collar’ rig (see attached page for details), when fished in conjunction with a ‘Tubi-Boom’. Each lure is armed with a razor sharp 9/0 O’Shaughnessy hook, that is just waiting for its next victim.

Although available in a variety of smaller sizes, we only stock the largest, as it mimics one of the universal prey species. This lure has a long history of big fish, and numerous fishy tales of repute. At one time nearly all the IGFA line class records for two species were held with this lure, it is very successful, and just needs the adventurous southern African boat anglers to try a variation in technique to experience the next new secret weapon.

The 210mm Redgill, or Thresher as it is known, is a long tailed synthetic rubber lure, designed to emulate a long thin bait fish. This design makes it perfect for fishing around the world, as in near all locations there are prey species of these proportions. In an offshore fishing sense, it mimics the saury, ballyhoo or half beak, and the swimming action generated by the tail, just makes it almost too good to eat! Not that the size of the lure affects the size of the predators doing the eating – Marlin, Tarpon, Sailfish, Tunas, and a host of smaller game species have been successfully caught on this lure.

ELECTRON

The concept of the design is to imitate the prey species, and to induce a rapid strike, where the Tigerfish actually ‘eat’ the lure and the hidden hook, and then the fish stays on the hook. Overcoming a problem with Tigerfish.

It is at the point of ‘hook up’ that the trouble usually starts, the Tigerfish starts shaking its head both underwater and during those fantastic leaps in the air; this usually results in the lure flying out, and another strike, that didn’t become a boated fish. The specific design of the ‘Electron ’ ensures a good hook up, and one that will not release until the fish is in the boat.

‘Electron ’ are available in two sizes, to cover the size of the prevailing bait fish on the river, and in a choice of colours.

The holographic mother of pearl epoxy finish to the head, is very durable. The iridescent hair will even glow in the dark, providing a superb lure for deep water, or for fishing during ‘predator time’, early or late in the day, when the predators have a visual advantage over their prey.

These were originally developed for fishing for Atlantic Salmon in Ireland, using egg sinkers inside a shredded condom (hence the name ‘Flying C’). They were so successful at the task of catching Salmon, and very many other species, that a more mechanised version was developed, which has now become the norm. They retain all their original effectiveness, and are a superb lure for fresh water predatory species like Tigerfish and Bass, as well as sea species. They work on both visual and vibration stimulation of the predatory species.

We build the fresh water style to cater for a variety of species likely to be encountered by our customers.

The traditional freshwater ‘Flying C’ in a range of colours and blade types. In Ireland the blade colours of either Gold or Silver reflect their use in either coloured or clear waters, this we have personally found to be repeated with respect to Tigerfish in the Zambezi. We build these in either 10gm or 20gm weights to suit the customers choice of tackle. These are built with extra strong steel trebles or stainless steel double or single hooks.

Our colour range is now black, black and orange, black and pink, black and yellow, hot pink, red and yellow, red and white, purple, black and purple, fluorescent yellow and green and yellow.
These skirts are super tough to easily resist the teeth of such species as Tigerfish or even Elf (Shad).

This lure has earned an outstanding reputation for catching Sailfish in both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. It is equally at home rigged with either strip bait or whole Ballyhoo, as well as being used as a bare lure.

The light weight head allows the popper shape to really come to the fore, but doesn’t deter the Sailfish from ‘mouthing’ the lure. The popper shape to the head is responsible for the outstanding ‘smoke’ produced by this lure when trolled between 5-8 knots.

Additionally, the lure has found some success with large Jack Crevalles in Angola, when trolled along the back line of the surf – especially when held by the angler to augment the popping action with gentle pulls on the rod. The resultant explosions of the Jack Crevalle taking a surface lure is truly heartstopping.

Available in 3 head colours according to sunlight conditions, bright yellow, white and silver pearl. Skirts are either red & gold glitter, purple glitter and black petro’.

MARLIN

MARLIN LURES

We present our range of Marlin lures based on the culmination of years of big game fishing research in all parts of the world, though primarily the Atlantic Ocean.

Our range is primarily the ‘Gang of Three’ and a singular ‘winner’, that cover the majority of trolling lure situations likely to be experienced by dedicated Marlin fisherfolk.

The ‘Gang of Three’ are

Cerebus (Ea) A straight running, short cycling lure that just oozes ‘smoke’

Pegasus (Do) A cup faced lure that will create smoke and noise in the spread, has been known to ‘wake the dead’.

Hydra (Sp) Another straight running lure but faster cycling to induce ‘action’ and ‘smoke’ in the spread.

These lures are all available in three deliberately chosen skirt combinations that cover the three primary light conditions experienced by Marlin fisherfolk – dark, bright and medium. The head shapes and sizes have been designed to cover nearly all conditions

Our colour designs for the ‘gang of three’ are as follows, and the heads are matched to the skirts.

‘Hot Tuna’ is blue, silver and pink over a yellow pink and blue under skirt – a perfect all round colour for all conditions, especially whena perfect imitation is needed.

‘Lumi Mackerel’ is blue stripes on a luminous skirt, over green and yellow. A superb low light lure, especially effective at dawn and dusk, it truly glows in the dark.

‘Oily Anchovy’ Black and purple with a iridescent oily patch on top and on the underside, over a hot pink and red under skirt. A lure ideally suited to bright to very bright light conditions.

Our last lure is a well chosen all rounder that can be trolled as a first choice in any spread, though onlyavailable in ‘Hot Tuna’, the Unicorn (Ld), is responsible for more dollars in prize money than any other single lure.

All Excalibur marlin trolling lures come with large movable eyes and nylon chafe tubes. The packaging for each lure indicates the recommended maximum hook size, though we only recommend ‘Katana’ trolling hooks or stiff rigs for our lures.
